Rubicon Carbon and Ecobase Announce Offtake Agreement for First-Ever European Afforestation Credits

The project’s first issuance of carbon credits, which have been purchased by Rubicon Carbon, feature a unique financial structure that prioritizes support for landowners.

Marina del Rey, California, January 28, 2025 Rubicon Carbon, a carbon credit management firm, today announced a strategic partnership with Ecobase, an Estonian-based developer of European forestry carbon projects with over 7 million hectares under management, to purchase credits from a pan-European afforestation project. This purchase marks the beginning of a larger partnership between the organizations, who jointly see the need to develop high-quality, nature-based carbon credits that contribute to environmental sustainability while unlocking carbon finance for European landowners.

Europe is home to one-quarter of the world’s forests, which act as natural carbon sinks that sequester CO from the atmosphere. Ecobase is the largest developer of afforestation projects in Europe, with its Verra-certified pan-European project estimated to remove more than 300 million tons of CO₂ over its 100-year lifespan. This purchase makes Rubicon Carbon the first-ever buyer of afforestation credits for an EU-based project, which will be incorporated into its diversified, risk-adjusted carbon credit portfolios that are available to purchase by companies worldwide.

“Despite growing interest from both local private sector and European environmental regulatory bodies, there are not many high-quality European forestry credits currently available on the market,” said Tom Montag, Chief Executive Officer at Rubicon Carbon. “We’re excited to partner with Ecobase and for this opportunity to support critical nature-based solutions that will help combat the decline of Europe’s carbon sinks while supporting local landowners and communities.”

Ecobase’s afforestation project spans 24 countries and is expanding rapidly within these markets. Ecobase expects to grow to cover more than 500,000 hectares of land within the next few years. In addition, the project provides a unique opportunity for landowners to retain ownership of carbon credits and gain access to vital new revenue streams.

“We’re pleased to have found such close alignment with a partner who understands the importance of developing high-quality forestry credits in Europe” said Jaan Sepping, CEO of Ecobase. “This strategic partnership will help both us and Rubicon Carbon expand our reach and aid both the environmental and economic development of European landowners.”
